Weekly tip: read the mountain forecast before you pack

Conditions decide the kit. This week's tip: check the mountain forecast, not just the town one, and pack for the worst part of the day.

As a former guide, the habit I trust most is simple: look at the forecast for the height you'll actually be running at.

Try this week

Before your long run, check wind, temperature and precipitation for the highest point of the route. Pack for that, not for the car park.

Why it matters

It can be calm in the valley and wild on the ridge. A warm layer and a proper jacket turn a bad hour into an inconvenience.

Which forecast should I trust?

Use the official weather service for the country you're running in and look for its mountain or summit forecast at the height of your route. If two sources disagree, pack for the worse one.
